Band Wars 2 the Revenge returned to the Lethbridge College Barn for another sold out crowd.
While I couldn’t stay for the whole thing, I was there for rap duo Penny Fortune’s set which won this event. They placed second in the last band wars in January.
But people responded to their blend of rap and hip hop with live keyboards and guitar. They exhibited catchy vocal melodies, some funky guitar chops and entertaining keyboards.
I also missed a set by the revamped local rock/ metal band Eyes of Isis, which earned them second place.
Though I missed Caste of Shadows and Enceladus who made an impression during their January Band Wars appearance, as well as James Clare and a slightly tweaked DeadVoice, I caught impressive and loud sets by Chief Mountain and the Living Luca as well as death metal from Decimate the Silence.
Lock N Load impressed me right off , starting with some two handed guitar tapping and a howling, charismatic frontman who yelled like Metallica’s James Hetfield as he guzzled beer and leaped all over the stage.
They ended their energetic and loud set by throwing t-shirts into the crowd, launching the last one onto a light fixture high above the dance floor, writhing with boisterous fans sporting the shirts emblazoned with the phrase “We‘re loaded.”
Chief Mountain added to their psychedelic garage rock sound by adding Mexican wrestler masks to their stage show. They played a solid set, though they played a lot more of their slower songs which I don’t like as much as their more uptempo material.
The Living Luca were in fine form as Bridgette Yarwood continues to be the quintessential charismatic frontwoman.
They began with a real cool, fast, funky new song powered by an intricate bassline. Yarwood grabbed a pair of drumsticks and did a dual drum solo with her brother Brendon.
