The Bowman always has interesting exhibits. Two of them opened April 9 for good sized crowds who came out to enjoy them on the weekend.

The Students of Life figure drawing exhibit in one room is impressive, with numerous stunningly beautiful sketches and drawings of several nudes.

But the one that was catching the eyes of most people was Peter Gilligan’s “Under Christou’s Panel— The Recycled  Imagination of Peter Gillian.
He turned what most people would consider  junk — i.e. pieces of metal, old discs, pallets into things of true beauty.

A really beautiful fountain is the first thing you see upon entering ‘the curtain.’ Gravel fills a pallet, with wood set along the sides and water flows over three old discs. There are also an assortment of beautiful lamps and a fast moving ballerina and a lot more.

Over at the Penny building, on fifth street downtown, University of Lethbridge New Media students have some of their favourite works on display until  April 21.

There are mock ups of movie posters, some of the films which were shown at the University of Lethbridge Film Festival a couple weeks ago, photoshopped photographs. A special display is New Media MFA candidate Marta Blicharz’s “Breaking the Spell, ” an exhibit of computer code which shows how much impact changing one tiny character can have on a photograph.

“We’ve really excited about this space,” said New Media Department assistant professor Emily Luce, adding she is looking forward to having more students exhibiting their work in the building.

There are 17 artists participating in this exhibit which runs until April 21.

Art student open house coming up

Coming up this week is the annual Art Student open house at the University of Lethbridge. The students will open up their studios to the public for two days, April 19-20 and show off their latest works in the atrium as well as the seventh and eighth floors of University Hall. There will be a variety of pieces  including sculpture, photography, print, installation, multi-media and video from undergraduate and Masters of Fine Arts students.
While you are there, stop by the Helen Christou Gallery next to the library to see the 1950s. This new exhibit features works from the University of Lethbridge Art Collection and the Galt Museum and Archives. It is held in conjunction with  the Historic Lethbridge Festival. There will be an array of art including photographs and prints depicting Lethbridge from the 1950s. The official opening is April 15.

Billy McCarroll hosting happy house at SAAG

Also this week. If you haven’t checked out Billy McCarroll’s exhibit at the SAAG, check out SAAG Happy Hour, this Friday, April 15 at 5 p.m. There will be art, jazz music, conversation and laughs. Billy McCarroll will be playing bass with Dale Ketcheson playing classical guitar. There will also be mini-golf.
