Hamilton based singer songwriter Chris Adeney aka Wax Mannequin is enjoying his latest tour across Canada with his old friends the Burning Hell.
They are supporting a brand new vinyl split seven inch record “Hear Some Evil,” including Wax Mannequin’s “Black Bells,” The Burning Hell’s “My Name is Matthias” and pretty cool cover of ’80s hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart.”
Wax Mannequin plays the Slice, Aug. 12, and while the Burning Hell are joining him for most of the tour, they won’t be joining him for the Lethbridge leg of the tour. He’ll be boarding a Greyhound bus to complete his tour solo.
He’ll spend his time on the bus working on new songs for a full length follow up CD to his 2009 CD “Saxon”, arranging all of the thoughts and stories he has experienced on tour.
“I find the less I sleep, the more inspired I get. There are a lot of experiences I’ve had on the road over the past nine years that I need to describe and write and reflect on,” he said.
“One of the songs is about having to leave my kid behind to go on tour. But I Skype him everyday,” he observed.
A couple of the completed new ones have been slowly making their way onto the set list.
he is glad to be back on the road with the Burning Hell. He enjoyed last year’s tour with them so much , he wanted to commemorate it by recording “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” with them.
“On our last tour together, they played ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ a lot and it just stuck in our heads, so when got to the west coast to our friend’s studio in Courtney , B.C, we recorded it,” he said adding they wanted to create a souvenir of sorts to commemorate their tour together and thought “Total Eclipse,” was a perfect fit.
“ The lyrics are very schlocky but also very visceral and it’s very catchy,” he said.
“We’ve modernized it and find people really appreciate it,” he continued.
“My Name is Matthias is by the Burning Hell’s Matthias Kom. It tells you a little bit about who he is and where he comes from,” he said.
“And I sing ‘Black Bells.’ The lyrics are really dark but the melody is really kind of poppy,” he said.
“It’s great being able to tour with the Burning Hell and sing these songs together,” he said. People have been really enjoying the new music and especially having it in vinyl.
“The reception to it has really been impressive,” he said.
“ We had a lot of support for it at the Brandon Folk Festival. So it’s been wonderful,” he said.
He is looking forward to playing Lethbridge again.
“I’ll be playing solo, just me and my songs and my nylon string guitar and my sequencers, but I’m going to try to get local musicians too, like my friend Dino (Scavo) if he’s around, to play some accordion,” he said.
Wax Mannequin plays Friday, Aug. 12 at the Slice at approximately 9:30 p.m. with special guests the Void. There will be a $10 cover.
