Edmonton’s The Boogie Patrol are back with more of the organ powered ’60s/ ’70s style R and B you know and love.
They have just released their brand new second CD “ I Try and I Try And I Don’t Know What to Do… The Plan Was Set Some Time Ago and We Must Follow Through.”
And while they could have trimmed the title, I’m glad they didn’t trim the music, which includes a lot of extended jams among the talented musicians which is pretty similar to what happens when you catch one of their live shows.
It is almost 60 minutes of pop/ soulful ’60s style goodness which is a beautiful tip of the hat and nod of the head to the soul that came before.
They start off with the catchy “Cool Under Fire,” and slowly pick up the pace with cascading keyboards, tasteful guitar before slowing down with another organ powered slow blues song “Taking Time.” They get back to form with “The Bird and the Boy,” one of many tracks which transport the listener back in time.
Rotten Dan and a chorus of back-up vocalists on several tracks transport the listener right back to the ’60s and early ’70s glory days of soul.
There is a lot of beautiful organ, some funk on “ The Hesitant Upon.”
They show gospel isn’t too far removed from soul music on “Shaking Goes to Show,” which features a wild organ solo and some wicked bass playing.
Harmonica is also a big part of the live experience, but on this CD, it only comes to the forefront a few times such as on “Bathe With Your Woman” which also best illustrates their unusual sense of humour as well as “Hey Barber.”
Rotten Dan, as, usual, sings with so much soul, you can’t believe he’s from Edmonton, you expect him to be from the south side of Chicago.
