Unknown Culprits add some blues to Foo Fighters-style rock

E-mail Print

If the Foo Fighters jammed with Edmonton’s soulful blues orchestra the Boogie Patrol and the Trews, the result might sound like B.C. born, Toronto based the Unknown Click here to hear the Unknown CulpritsCulprits’ new CD “Shitcha.”
Throw in some Vancouver indie-rock and a touch of the Trews, a smattering of ska and you have The Unknown Culprits, who provide an entertaining and upbeat listen.

They grab you from the first track “ The Good Stuff,” and don’t stop through 10 uptempo highlights, though they slow things down on “Headin’ Out.”
Throughout there are tasteful guitar solos and funky bass, especially on “A Better Way.”

The title track, which could be a long lost Foo Fighters track, is a punkish highlight as is “Whiskey” which adds a touch of ska mixed with punk as well. It’s very catchy.

On the other hand, they go country on “16 Weeks in Hell” without losing any of their energy, then pick up the tempo again with “Poison Apples,” before ending on a soft, almost tender song “Squeak Squeak Goodnight.”
And having seen them play live, this CD actually captures their on-stage energy, which is often rare among bands.
