University shows, rap concerts and folk music mark slower week

Tonight, Nov. 29, popular Canadian crossover rapper ko-s performs at Finnegans with special guests the Dirty Mags. Ko-s  is best known for his hit records  Exit and Joyful Rebellion which featured the singles “Crabbuckit, “Man I Used To be” and the award winning “B-Boy Stance.” Tickets are $28.75. Doors open at 8 p.m.

Three big University of Lethbridge events mark a surprisingly slow week in Lethbridge.


 Even though December has barely begun, the University of Lethbridge Singers, The University of Lethbridge Women’s Chorus and Vox Musica are going to get you in the Christmas spirit withthe New Orford  String Quartet plays the University of Lethbridge, Dec. 3.  The groups, The University of Lethbridge Singers under the direction of Dr. Janet Youngdahl, The Women’s chorus under Dr. Sandra Stringer and  Vox Musica directed by Glenn Klassen will share the stage, performing individually, then come together for concert highlight  Stella Natalis, a “magical pice for choir” by  Karl Jenkins, which  draws on global inspirations like Zulu text, Hindu culture and Old Testament references and reflects the themes of peace and goodwill.


Tickets for Stella Natalis are $15 regular and $10 student/seniors and are available at the U of L Box Office – 403-329-2616 and at the door.  


 The University of Lethbridge has a special treat in the afternoon of Dec. 3 — The New Orford String Quartet, The quartet composed of  principal members of the Montreal and Toronto Symphony Orchestras Jonathan Crow (violin), Andrew Wan (violin), Eric Nowlin (viola) and Brian Manker (cello) were formed in 2009.


They will be playing an assortment of classics from Sokolovic, Beethoven, Brahms as well as contemporary work.  Plus, University of Lethbridge violinist Aaron Au will joins the quartet for a compelling performance of Brahms’ String Quartet op. 111 in G Major.
To reserve seats for this rare and exciting performance, visit the University Box Office, Monday – Friday 12:30- 3:30 p.m., or call (403) 329-2616. Tickets are only $15 regular, $10 for seniors/students. The performance takes place at 2 p.m. in the University of Lethbridge Recital Hall.
Also at the university, Dec. 3, bring the whole family out for some imaginative fun with  Imaginary Adventures.
 New West Theatre artistic director and University of Lethbridge professor Nick Hanson and  the U of L Theatre For Young Audiences class bring this production to the stage at the David Spinks Theatre.


The 50-minute performance contains a wide range of characters and stories created especially for young audiences.
“Although created with ages 5 to 10 in mind, the plays are fun for those aged 5 to 105,” Hanson said in a press release.
“While the short plays vary in topic and style, they are united by one thing: their endless fun!”

 The Slice has a couple musical highlights of a very slow week.
Toronto based, Winnipeg raised singer songwriter Daniel Sky plays the Slice, Nov. 30. he
Lethbridge blues/ rock band Zojo Black featuring Greg Gomola and Paul Kype make their last local appearance in a while at the Slice, Dec. 3. The show begins at 9 p.m.

The night before, on Dec. 2, Edmonton’s Jeff Stuart and the Hearts return to the Slice with the Colleen Brown band.
 Jeff Stuart and the Hearts have just released their very successful  sophomore CD  “Equal Parts Reason and MoonLight.
He will bringing a six piece band for the Lethbridge show. Sharing a stage with the Colleen Brown band like the last time they played here came as a pleasant surprise.

There will be a $10 cover for the show.

 Vancouver based finger-style guitar picker Lowry Olafson plays a big show for the The Lethbridge Folk Club, Dec. 3. Olafson has nine CDs and spent much of the week working in Lethbridge schools running his songwriting  workshop from the Page to the Stage in One Day.
 He promised to play an array of songs from throughout his career in his solo performance. Tickets cost $20 for members, $25 for non-members. It begins at 8 p.m. sharp with Maureen Chambers opening the show.


It is the season for fundraisers. This week the Owl Acoustic Lounge hosts another Thursday night fundraiser. Several Lethbridge musicians including Leeroy Stagger, Matthew Robinson, John Wort Hannam, Johnpaul Smith, Brenna Lowrie, Indio Saravanja, Vista Park and Karen Romanchuk will all be playing to raise money to fight AIDS in honour of World AIDS Day.
 Admission is by donation for the show which is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m., Dec. 1.


 The day before, Nov. 30, Lethbridge country group The Coal Creek Boys play the Barn right after Yuk Yuks comedy.


 If you like modern country music, Gord Bamford, who was a highlight of the Canadian Country Weekend this summer, brings his  Second annual Gord Bamford’s Country Christmas tour to Lethbridge, Nov. 30 —one of 12  rural Alberta Schools. He plays the Children of St. Martha Elementary School  ( #206, McMaster Boulevard, West Lethbridge)  Bamford has a string of radio hits including “Day Job,” “Hank Williams Lonesome,” and “My Daughter’s Father” off his latest hit album “Day Job.” He is also known for hits like  “Blame It On the Red Dress,” “Drinkin’ Buddy and “Stayed Til Two.” Tickets for the show, which starts at 6:30 p.m., cost $35. The school’s  choir/ musical group will be opening the show. They will also get to have a meet and greet with Bamford.

 There is also a huge show for hip hop fans coming up. Ghostface Killah from the famed Wu-Tang Clan will be making his Lethbridge debut at the Stone, Dec. 6 with special guests Peter Jackson and Sweatshop Union. Tickets are $40.
 Just outside of town, local punk rockers will want to be at the Vent in Coaldale, where Victoria based Canadian punk icons the Dayglo Abortions will be playing with Parapsychotic, The Scallywags and Gender Bender. The show is 8-11 p.m.. Admission is $10.
