Edmonton folk duo Jesse Dee and Jacquie B sound a lot like Winnipeg folk/ blues duo Brandy Zdan and Dave Quanbury of Twilight Hotel, but also sound a little like Paul Simon.
So if you like catchy vocal harmonies and folk/ blues music coming at you straight out of the 1930s, then you will love “Our Ghosts Fill These Walls,” the formers’ new CD.
They jump right into things with the upbeat folk rocker “The Straggler.”
The spooky rockabilly tinged number “ Looks Like We Got A Problem” is one of several highlights. Jacquie B’s accordion adds a jazzy French cabaret feel to several tracks including “That Sucker.”
There is a lot going on in these songs with a variety of instruments, chicken picking and some catchy keyboards and piano on tracks like “Maybe, Maybe Not.”
“Straggler”’ has a beautiful guitar solo as well.
thematically, ghosts play a pretty prominent role throughout as there are several mentions of ghosts throughout the song.
There is understated cello on “For The Moon,” and throughout there are some very pretty vocal harmonies. “Wells” features some sweet harmonica playing.
And there are upbeat New Orleans style dixieland horns and extra vocals from sometime band mate Scott Cook on the last track, “I’m Still Hot.”
It’s not quite blues, not quite country but has roots in all of those.
