Cabaret at CASA a highlight of Arts Days

E-mail Print PDF

One of the highlights of Arts Days this year was the cabaret at CASA, Sept. 26.Benton Neufeld performing magic at CASA’s Arts Days cab, Sept. 26.
Local comedy troupe the Drama Nutz got a good sized audience of approximately 60 people warmed up with a game called Sound Effects which had half of them mooing like cows and the other half roaring like velociraptors as the cast acted out a scene, taking place fittingly in Jurassic Park.

Carlin Parker of local band Pistols and Parachutes played a solo set of acoustic covers  Tom Petty and Blue Rodeo and one of his band’s songs which is getting airplay in Calgary.

While magician Benton Neufeld  got set up, the Drama Nutz played  a game called Mugshot which was a take off of film noir detective movies.

Neufeld put on an interesting set of magic involving balls, lemons, limes and bottles in boxes. He brought audience members on stage to help with a few other tricks including Drama Nutz member Jon Kirsch.

The Drama Nutz were up again as Neufeld tore down his props, to play a game called Slide Show, which took place in the North Pole.

It was time for a couple of stand up comedians next. Andrew Merrigan’s very first stand-up performance surrounded  weight loss, food and nicknames. He even incorporated some of his renown tap dancing skills, performing a dance to ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ which incorporated a box of Chicken McNuggets.

Drama Nutz member Sam Benty had an interesting stream of consciousness routine including everything about working at a hotel creating continental breakfasts to why his belt was undone.

Unfortunately I missed solo performances by Joshua Reuben and mental magician Jeff Newman.
