E-mail Print

University of Lethbridge New Media students are showing what they can do at the Dr. Penny Foster Building with two shows  happening this week.
The first show, “Art of the Ages” was produced  entirely by the New Media 3700 class, who produced the show, contacted artists from Halifax to Vancouver, designed the posters and  arranged for the room as part of their course.
It runs April 4-9 and explores a theme of past, present and future, so there are works ranging from a painting of Japanese abuses, wire sculptures, several computerized works, photographs and a giant worShayna Draven and her work in Art of the Ages. Photo by Richard Ameryk featuring a zombie which was created by combining zombie visuals in movies and television from the past few years.

There is a even a mounted alien head designed to make a commentary on taxidermy.
“ The 16 members of the class all different roles to play. They’ve created  the website and collected the works,” said their professor Will Smith.

The course included four similar components. The first was  a mini-film festival featuring original works,  which took place March 21-22 at CASA. It was free to attend like all of the components.

“The styles range from works inspired by the beginning of the twentieth century. A lot of the works were created on computers and shared through computers. Some of them are photographs that have had  the pixels modified or the RGB colours modified, or put through filters or algorithms,” he described.

The 60 piece exhibit also includes  a work by  Grade 10 student Shayna Draven, who has created a large painting called “Sunshine.” though it is of a blonde girl.
“ It’s really designed to represent the sun and what our viewpoints are of perfection,” Draven described adding she is excited to   have her first work in an exhibition.

“The sun is perfect. It creates life and perfection,” she observed adding she began her painting last July.
“It’s exciting, but I’m a little nervous. I’m interested in getting some feedback. There are a lot of college students doing it as part of the course, I’m the only high school student and I just wanted to do it for fun,” she said.
Art of the ages can be viewed April 5 from 1 p.m.-9 p.m.,  and April 6-9 from 1 p.m.- 9 p.m

The next exhibit , AdPort 4090  New Media exhibition, is in a similar vein except all of the works comes from the students in the 4690 and 4640 New Media class. It runs at the Dr. Penny Foster building April 11-16.

“There are a range of works,” Smith said adding there are more computer based works and some 3D works that can be viewed through special virtual reality oculus goggles, plus posters, web design, films and animation.
There will also be  a special presentation for people curious about how these works were created happening on April 12 from 11 a.m.,- 6 p.m.

 The gallery is open April 12-13 from 11 a.m.- 6 p.m. and April 14-16 from 11 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.
In addition to works  from the students, it also includes  a work from the professor.
