Calgary country turned rock and roll band Cowpuncher’s frontman Matt Olah always seems to have new adventures , whether hurting himself jumping off amps, or most recently crashing his bike, getting kicked out of a Blue Jays game for “allegedly drinking from a flask” and getting punched out in the middle of a bar fight in Toronto during Canadian Music Week.
“I’m just letting my face heal,” said Olah who brings Cowpuncher back to Lethbridge, June 14 at Scores for the Dodgeball Tournament after party. Tickets cost $15. there show begins at 9 p.m.
“ Two guys tried to take on the whole bar and my face got caught in the middle of it. It wasn’t much of a fight for me, it was me falling into a wall from the punch and getting back up and having it all happen again,” he described.
But Canadian Music Week wasn’t all pain, it was gain too as they sold out one of their two shows and recruited The Beauties drummer Derek Downham to produce their next album.
“We’ve been focusing on writing now. We got a grant and have to have eight songs done by January,” he said.
They have four songs completed which they will play in Lethbridge.
The $10,000 Rawlco grant will go a long way to recording the new album in the fall.
“We’ll be afford to pay Derek, but we’ll be on our own for recording,” he said.
“ We’ll record in the fall,” he said.
They are also working with a new bassist Shari Rae, formerly of Miss Quincy and the Showdown,Lindsay Ell and Picture the Ocean. She joined the band in February.
“ Harley (Hoeft) bowed out to go the family route so we held open auditions was by far the best,” he said.
“ It’s nice to have the female vibe in the band. And she swears like a sailor, so she fits right in,” he enthused.
They always enjoy playing Lethbridge.
“Lethbridge is always super fun. People there like to party, so we hope people will take it easy on us and our livers,” he said.
