Sean Hogan gets back to making music after beating cancer

It was a prophetic in a way that Campbell River, B.C. based country musician Sean Hogan’s last  CD of original music called “Phoenix,” (the mythical bird which when it dies is reborn out of its ashes) which is all about rebirth and recovery was released in 2011 just before he was diagnosed with Stage 3 oral pharyngeal cancer.

That lead to a long, lengthy and ultimately successful battle against the dreaded disease.

Today, Hogan is fighting fit and is happily working on his best of album.

“ I feel great. I have a lot of energy, so life is pretty good,” Hogan enthused.

He comes to the Slice to play a solo show, July 3.

Since emerging as a talented new young up and coming musician in 1996 he has recorded six albums and numerous hit singles including “Slow Turning,” “ Sure Fire Love,” “ Dream Vacation,” “ Angeline,” “ I'd Rather Have You,” “Centered,” “Catalina Sunrise,” “A Cowboy's Heart ,” “Suck It Up”  and “Travel Plans” off of Phoenix. He is a CCMA and Western Canadian Music Awards winner.

“I’ve got six separate CDs and wrote 90 per cent of the material on them,” said Hogan, who has slightly stepped back from  the life of a touring musician to become a much in demand voice actor for companies like Chrysler.

But as much as he love to stay home, spend time with his family while doing voice over work, he loves the life of a touring musician.

“I’m not going to stop doing music, but diversification is important. I still love performing. I’m  kind of a restless spirit,” he said.

So he has a lot of music to choose from in addition to some new  material and a  popular song he wrote last year to raise money for High River flood victims last year called “Hell or High Water.”

“ I may put that on the greatest hits album too,” he said.

He last played Lethbridge in 2010 to raise money for the Haiti flood victims with luminaries like Duane Steele and Trevor Panczak and Rough Stock and Alyssa McQuaid. He also played the Mocha Cabana around the same time.

He is glad to be coming  back.
“ Hopefully people will come out for it. It will be a solo show, so it should be great,” he said.
There is a five dollar cover for the July 3 show, which begins at 9 p.m.
