Papa King trades songs with Daryll Düus and Evan Uschenko

A decent crowd caught an exceptional show by three fine Lethbridge musicians, blues players Daryll  Düus, Papa King and roots rock guitarist Evan Uschenko at the 1010 Pub, July 26.Papa King playing the 1010 Pub, July 26. Photo by Richard Amery
I only caught a part of the show, but was impressed as always.

They have three pretty unique sounds and blended them into a beautiful mixture of blues and rock and roll.
Papa King strummed his acoustic and stomped out a drum beat on a gadget hooked up on the floor.
He sang his songs in his deep, gravelly Dr. John meets Tom Waits voice. Düus had an equally gravelly voice as he played a couple of originals from his last CD “Oilite.”

And Uschenko added tasteful leads and lead them through a note perfect cover of Canned Heat's “On The Road Again.”

They each took turns singing their songs add added rhythm, lead guitars and the occasional harmonica solo.
Papa King’s original “Busy Boy Blues,” was one of my favourites as was their cover of blues classic “Key to the Highway.” Düus usually tore things up on electric guitar, but switched to a battered acoustic  for a couple of songs.
King sang a dark version of folk classic “16 Tons.”

And the trio ended on a high note with Düus playing “So Tired,” from his most recent CD while Uschenko ended the set with his always enjoyable cover of Michael Rault's “Sidewinder.”
They returned for a brief set  of blues classics.

If you missed the show, don’t miss their Aug. 9 show at Jimmy’s Pub and Brasserie as it will be Düus's last show before he moves to B.C.
