Rae Kwon among cool shows coming up

There are a couple of really cool shows happening this week.
 On Jan. 30, Corey Woods, best known as Rae Kwon of renown New York rap collective the Wu Tang Clan plays a solo show at the Blarney Stone at 9 p.m.

Bridgette Yarwood plays the Mocha Cabana this week.
 Rae Kwon is touring on a  couple of new CDs, ‘The Lex Diamond Story,’  and the sequel to ‘Built 4 the Cuban Linx Part 2. Another Wu Tang Clan CD is in the works as well. Tickets are $30.

Jan. 29 will be an interesting night at Henotic. A new international art program called Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School, begins at Henotic with special guest Demonika. Demonika is a Calgary based performance artist who will be posing  for Dr. Sketchy’s which includes artists and would be artists who  gather together to draw. It is a celebration of burlesque and  the process of art. Works aren’t judged, though artists can show them if they want. Admission is $15. On the same night,  Calgary’s Savk and  the Magnetic North will be performing at Henotic as well.

The Slice has a big rock show  on Jan. 29 with Lustre Creame, Under the White Dime and Asprinaut.

Jan. 30 is crazy busy as well with the Skilletlikkers and Rob Ursel at the Slice and Calgary rock band the Dudes at  Henotic, plus Bridgette Yarwood at the Mocha Cabana. There is also a big gig at thew Wolf’s Den with First Nations flute player Two Spirit Sage, Celtic harpist Jan Pearce and up and coming young country singer Leah Sadler. Tickets for the show, which begins at 8 p.m., cost $15.

There is also a big two venue gig on Sunday, Jan. 31. Fist City, Myelin Sheaths and Lustre Creame will all be playing at Henotic, while Papa King and Darryl Düus, Stan Ashbee, the Record Holder and the Skilletlikkers will all be at the Slice.
There are lots of open mics this week. Treeline, who hosted the open mic at the 1010 Pub on Monday, also host  the Slice’s open mic tonight as well as playing for a benefit concert on Sunday at the Slice, Jan. 31.

Joel Bailey hosts the open mic at Henotic on Wednesday. Plus Beaches has their Thursday open mic with Greg Gomola and friends.
