Brandon, Manitoba based trio Until Red are excited to bring their brand of ’70s inspired Yacht Rock,” back to the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Monday, Oct. 5.
“ We’d rather play on a Friday or Saturday, but one of the guys‘ girlfriend’s birthday is then, so he has to be back for that,” said keyboardist / vocalist Liam Duncan, who said Until Red are proud to call themselves a yacht rock band.
“That was a genre of music in the mid ’70s that included bands like Hall and Oates and the Doobie Brothers. We were inspired by it. That’s the stuff we grew up listening to,” he said, getting ready to go on a 16 day tour with band mates Dylan MacDonald and Roman Clarke.
“ It’s just a quick tour. It’s only 16 dates. We’ll be back Oct. 10, but we’re going to all of the cities we want to except for two,” he said, adding Lethbridge is one of them.
“ We had a blast playing the Owl Acoustic Lounge last time. Everybody was up and dancing and we had a humourous conversation with the university radio station,” he recalled of their last Lethbridge show in late March.
He said Redekopp helped add a little grit to the band’s more polished ’70s soft rock sound.
“ We’ve been working on it for a year. We started it in November 2014 and found the record wasn’t what we wanted, so we scrapped three songs and added three more and Howard really helped added a little more of an edge to it,” he said, adding the band’s biggest project is completing their new CD, which they plan to release in late February 2016.
“He added that extra grit and made it a little less pop and we had a bigger budget for this one,” he said.
“We’re a young band so after four months, we’re playing together that much longer and we’re that much better of a band,” he said.
“We just got back from Vancouver and it is being mixed now,” he said adding he is sure there will still be things the band wants to change on it.
While they were working on the new album, they received the Winnipeg Folk Festival Rising Star award.
“We didn’t even know that award existed when they told us about it. So we’re glad to get those accolades. Hopefully it will lead to other accolades. We didn’t have an album out, so we couldn’t apply for any others,” he said.
He hopes people will come out to the show.
“We’re excited to play the Owl again. We hope people will come out. We excited to see our friends there again,” he said.
Until Red take the stage at approximately 9 p.m. on the Owl Acoustic Lounge’s Monday open mic night, Oct. 5.
