St. John’s , Newfoundland folk/ pop duo The Fortunate Ones are aptly named. The Fortunate Ones return to Lethbridge, Oct. 23. Photo submitted
They return to Lethbridge to play the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Oct. 23.

Since releasing their second CD the Bliss earlier this year, they have toured with Del Barber, been chosen to be part of a new program called the Allan Slaight Juno Master Class program and have had two of their songs, “Carry On” and “ Wherever You Go” placed in the hit TV show “Heartland.”

“It’s been a wild ride,” said singer/ accordionist/ guitarist/ pianist Catherine Allan, who met her partner and band mate Andrew James O’ Brien through her brother Mark who was playing in his band at the time a couple years ago.

“I was in university at the time and was working a job I really didn’t love and I’d never really performed. I was too nervous to take that step. I went to one of   their jams and just started  singing harmonies. I joined his band and our first gig was a couple of days later and the rest is history, I guess,” she said.

“Now I’m touring around, playing music with my partner,” she said.
She is looking forward to returning to Lethbridge.

They were last here to with the Sunparlour Players who were playing the Slice.

“My brother and his family is coming down from Calgary to see the show,” she enthused.
We’ve been working on a new song. We’re just excited to  play. We can’t wait to get there and meet some new people,” she said.

They are pleased to have their songs featured on Heartland.
“ It’s been two episodes in a row,” she said.

“We’re really happy they chose our songs. It’s really interesting to see how they use them.”

They are just as excited to be chose one of three bands participating in  the Allan Slaight Juno Master Class.

“We’re one of three bands they chose, so they’re going to fly us to Toronto for meetings with producers, songwriters and accountants. MuchMusic is going to film it and they’re going to fly us back there for the Junos,” she enthused.

“We both want to get better at what we do.  We both have a really good feeling about it. It’s five days of really intense classroom,” she said.

“It’s almost overwhelming,” she said.
The Fortunate Ones play the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Oct. 23 at 9 p.m. There is no cover for the show.
