St. Patrick’s Day and Fundrive mark an exciting week

This week is St. Patrick’s Day, so that means everybody and his  dog will be featuring live music.
But first, Vancouver based Celtic pipe powered punks the Real McKenzies return to get you primed for St. Patrick’s Day at Studio 54, March 16. Montreal punk band the Boids will be back with them as well. Plus the Lethbridge Firefighters Pipes and Drums will be performing.

Tickets cost $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Doors open at 8 p.m.

 Regardless of St. Patrick’s Day falling on a Thursday this year,  there will be many a St. Patrick’s Day party happening.
 The Slice features The Junkman’s Quire with Tom Scott and Ryland Moranz plus That ____ Band. The show begins at 9 p.m.. There is  $10 cover.


Coyote Joes goes Celtic on St. Patrick’s Day with St. John’s, Newfoundland band Shanneyganock beginning at 8:30 p.m.
 Tickets cost $25 in advance $30 at the door.


 Just up the road at the Tilted Kilt, there will also be live music with acoustic rock band Red Light District beginning at 8 p.m..
If you want to bang your head for St. Patrick’s Day, Penitentz along with Side Stepping The Sun, Trismegistus and No Devil Lived On and Sacred Savage play a special “green jam” at Inferno beginning at 9 p.m.


There is even a St. Patrick’s Day party on the west side as the Bridge hosts local rock band the Silkstones at Pop’s Pub West. There is no cover for that show.


D’Arcy Hepher and Ian Hepher have a busy couple of days. They are not only playing the Owl Acoustic Lounge for St. Patrick’s Day, but they also play a special fundraiser at the Lethbridge Legion, March 19. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. with the Highland Dancers, the pipe band and much more. Tickets cost $20.

 

 Friday night, March 18 will be a busy one. While the Lethbridge Folk club presentation of Andrew Scott has been cancelled, there is a lot more happening.

And it is a good Friday for alternative rock as well.

 U of L based community radio station CKXU kicks off Fundrive with a variety of events.
The most important event for live music lovers is the Tuneful Tangle — a band wars featuring local bands playing Attainable Records beginning at 7 p.m.
 Attainable Records also hosts an excellent pop-punk show on Tuesday, March 22 with the Youngbloods, Open 24/7 and Medicine Hat’s Tank Town. There is a $10 cover for that show.


The other big alternative show is at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, March 18 with Birch Barks, Horse Face/ Angel Ass.
The Owl Acoustic Lounge also brings back Calgary indie rock and folk band the Ashley Hundred, March 19. They will be joined by Calgary psych rock band The Heirlooms.


And the Geomatic Attic will be featuring an excellent Sunday night country/ folk show show with the Matt Patershuk Band and Calgary’s Carter Felker with local musician Danny Dyck on steel guitar.
 Patershuk just released his second Steve Dawson produced CD “I Was So Fond of You.”
 Tickets cost $27.50.
 IN between all of that, catch some up and coming talent throughout the week  at the Kiwanis Music and Speech Arts Festival.
 Young performers will be  performing  piano, organ, choir and many other categories  at  the Sterndale Bennett Theatre, yates Theatre, Southminster United Church,  St. Augustine’s Church, St. Patrick’s Fine Arts Elementary  School. and the Library. This year’s festival winds up on March 19 at the Yates Theatre with the Stars of the Festival  Concert at 7:30 p.m. Admission to the show is five dollars.
