University of Lethbridge based community radio station CKXU was out in the community even more than usual with a variety of events as part of their Nicole Hembroff playing violin with Love Hertz as part of FunDrive wrap up party Freq Mod, March 25. This year’s  Fun Drive came very close to reaching $30,000 goal by raising a total of $24,525 when phone lines closed at 6 p.m., March 25, but more donations are coming in.

One of the highlights was The Tuneful Tangle, Saturday afternoon, March 19. The Tuneful Tangle is a brand new band wars  style event sponsored by CKXU, The Lethbridge Girls Rock Camp and the Lethbridge Boys and Girls Club  designed to support  young high school bands.

I stopped by to hear a few acts including Charlie Silver and River Stone who sang a short set of songs a cappella.
The winners get to play some pretty high profile gigs this year.

I caught the last set of the afternoon from Diversified  — a  group of Grade 9  students  who played a set of country including  Johnny Cash’s  “Folsom Prison Blues,” and modern pop hits. They will be a perfect fit for this year’s Canada Day celebrations.

I missed the heavier acts who began the afternoon. However rock/ pop/punk trip  Living an Eon earned a slot at this year’s Electric Eye Festival in May. And tech death metal duo An Aether of Pestilence earned a live audio/ video performance on CKXU.
