March ends on a heavier note this week with some key shows happening.
Elise Roller, who used to sing lead vocals with popular Calgary band Go For The Eyes, shows her heavier side with Winnipeg metal/ grunge band the Solhounds. They make their Lethbridge debut, Thursday, March 31 at the Owl Acoustic Lounge. They will be joined by a new project from Jeff Turner, who also used to sing lead vocals with Go For the Eyes.
A couple of cool shows bring March to a close on March 31.
Calgary rockabilly band the Hi Strung Downers return to the Owl Acoustic Lounge to bring some twang into Spring.
The Geomatic Attic Attic features four exceptional songwriters, March 31 as Kimberley MacGregor, Matt Patershuk, Mike Stack and Lethbridge’s Ryland Moranz play their songs and help each other out on each other’s songs.
Calgary psychedelic rock/ folk band Flowshine returns to the Slice, March 31 as well.
Dueling Pianos returns to Average Joes, March 31 as well.
Over at Casino Lethbridge, country band El Camino are playing both March 31 and April 1.
The Slice has a big local rock show on April 1 with JJ Thomas, Free the Cynics, the Dirti Speshuls and Gabriel Olsen all performing.
Things will be a little mellower at the Owl Acoustic Lounge as Vancouver based indie rock/ Radiohead inspired band Goodwind Atoms play April 1 with songwriter pat Moloney
And it’s never too soon to plan ahead.
Local singer/ songwriters Shaela Miller and Mwansa Mwansa are playing a free show at the Slice, April 5 for CKUA’s week long Touch the Transmitter tour, which will be broadcasted live as part of the Alberta radio station’s 20th anniversary celebrations. Meet hosts Haley Muir and David Ward at 6:30 p.m. with the broadcast beginning at 7 p.m.
And even further down the line, The City of Lethbridge, University of Lethbridge and Enmax Centre just announced the first part of the line up for the Shine On Summer Festival, a special 150th anniversary celebration at the University of Lethbridge, Sept. 1-3.
Country star Dallas Smith, and up and coming talent Washboard union and a rare local show from Corb Lund will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of Canada as well as the fiftieth anniversary of the University of Lethbridge.
Early bird tickets are on sale now for $50 until April 7 or until the first 1,000 are sold.
DJ Millz Skillz aka Riley Miller is excited to will be opening the night.
“It won’t be any different than playing a set at Hudsons,” said Miller who usually spins electronica music.
“But I’ll play to the crowd and get them warmed up and make sure everybody has a good time,” he said.
“I’m 100 per cent excited to perform. It is a part of history. And there will be fireworks. We only get fireworks once a year,” he said.
September will be busy as the U of L’s Fresh Fest is the following weekend followed by CKXU’s Love and Records festival.
The rest of the acts for the family friendly festival will be announced at a later date.
