Calgary rock band Cowpuncher played what was likely their last Lethbridge show at the Slice on April 13.
I expected to have to squeeze myself through a packed crowd, but it was not to be on a Thursday night. They drew a decent sized crowd, though not overwhelming.
They were breaking in a new bassist who frontman Matt Olah called “Siposaurus,” as their usual bassist Shari Rae was away on assignment with the military.
So the result was a short and sweet set, which captured the essence of the band and left the audience wanting a lot more, as they didn’t play some of my favourites.
But they played a solid set of big riffs, huge groove and some subtle harmonized guitar leads and licks. They also showed a little bit of their country roots.
Olah stepped off the stage to let the guitarists take the spotlight during their solos.
They started their set off slowly, and found their groove before letting loose. Olah got the audience to sing along with a couple more anthemic numbers.
And before we knew it the show was over before midnight and the audience was left waiting for a second set which never came as the band started tearing down.
