Approximately 35 people took in an evening of laid back African music and stories at the Geomatic Attic, April 14. Toronto based Rwandan musician the Mighty Popo was a a charming and engaging host throughout the show. He said he was suffering from a cold and upon hearing one of the audience members coughing, gave her a Fisherman’s Friend in between songs.
In between that, he told stories about traditional Rwandan music and set down a laid back hypnotic groove with the help of his percussionist Kofi who played rhythm on a cajon he sat upon.
Popo was playing a weird looking guitar made out of a gourd, which replicated the sound of traditional Rwandan instrument called an inanga. So he told stories about that. His trio added pretty cool traditional vocal harmonies which meant to a pretty relaxing and educational evening.
The Geomatic Attic has another excellent show this week, April 24 with jazz and blues guitarist Gaye Delorme. Tickets cost $20 for members, $25 at the door. the show begins at 8 p.m.
