Home is more than a building, it’s where the heart is and where your own personal memories lie.
That’s the idea behind the Galt Museum’s new exhibit “Recollecting home, running at the Galt Museum Feb. 1-May 5.
“ The idea is to explore different ideas of home from people in the community, ” summarized curator Aimee Benoit.
So last year, the Galt Museum put out a call on social media for people to select items from the Galt Museum’s archives and write a story about their personal memories of the items.
“ We got close to 60 participants. It’s similar to the Treasuries and Curiosities exhibit,”’ said Benoit.
It is an opportunity for us to connect to the community as well as for the community to get a behind the scenes experience,” she said.
There are several different of similarly themed items, including music, chores, kitchen and several other categories.
“ We got a good cross-section of ages and cultural backgrounds in the exhibit,” said Benoit, adding surprisingly there wasn’t a lot of overlap in the items chosen, though there are two saddles.
There are 70 artifacts in the exhibit as a couple of the participants chose more than one.
There is everything from old radios, a guitar, a soldiers’ uniform, several household appliances and more.
An old kitchen table sits at the centre of the room, where an interactive smells of home exhibit is located.
“Because a lot of people think of smells like the smell of cookies and home made bread when they think of home,” she added.
In addition, the museum asked both ESL students and students from the Kainai High School to create artwork of their memories of home for an exhibit in the north room.
“They also talked to some elders about what home means to them,” Benoit continued.
Recollecting home is at the Galt Museum Feb. 1-May 5.
