Lethbridge seniors rock.
The Lethbridge Seniors Citizens Organization is holding a massive outdoor music festival for classic rockers in the community, June 5 at the Civic Field, behind the Lethbridge Seniors Citizens Organization from noon to nine p.m. The event, LSCO Rocks The Block, kicks off LSCO Seniors week, June 6-12.
The free outdoor concert at Civic Field (behind the Lethbridge Senior’s Centre organization) featuring some of Lethbridge’s favourite classic rock bands including Who’s Yer Daddy, The Chevelles, Texas Flood, Fast Times, Hippodrome, Ah Bee Normal and Unzipped who will finish the night.
“More and more are we seeing the need for more fundraising. So we decided to reach out and do more community orientated events,” said Lethbridge Seniors Organization volunteer and fundraising co-ordinator Marcie Stork.
“Anyone who has a mom and dad can benefit from what we do here,” Stork continued adding classic rock music appeals to a wide segment of the population, plus holding a big concert like this is a great way to support the local music community.
“It’s a free concert, but there will be a beer garden, raffles and vendors. There will be different kinds of food,” Stork enthused, adding funds will be raised through the beer gardens, raffles renting space to the vendors and from major sponsors including Martin Bros. Funeral Chapels.
“Baby boomers expect different things than older seniors, so we’ve got to change with the times,” Stork continued adding Who’s Yer Daddy starts things off at noon with popular top 40 band the Chevelles following as they have an evening gig elsewhere. Hippodrome is also playing in the middle of the afternoon.
“We’re hoping people will come early for the Chevelles and stay to hear Hippodrome and stay after that,” she said.
“It’s all coming together, but we need a good turnout for this. And we also need volunteers for this especially for setting up and clearing up,” she said.
For people who aren’t into classic rock, that same day from 1-11 p.m., there will be numerous polka bands playing in the gym including local talent. Tickets for that event cost $20.
“There’s something for everybody,” she said adding that is only the start of a week of seniors activities, which include a barbecue and a live auction on Wednesday, June 9 and a craft sale, June 11.
“We’re still accepting items for the auction. And we’re hoping to do things that we hope we can make annual events. Plus there are lots of displays and demonstrations here throughout the week,” she said.
Another special event, though it falls outside of Seniors week, is a special performance by award winning Canadian folk/country musician Gary Fjellgaard
