Ray Sawyer and Dr. Hook play all of Hook’s hits

E-mail Print PDF

Legendary country rockers/ humourists Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show featuring Ray Sawyer had a Ray Sawyer of Dr. Hook played all his hits, OCt. 21 at Scores North. Photo by Richard Amerypacked Scores North dancing up a storm in front of the stage and singing/ laughing along with every word of their many  ’70s hits on a Thursday night, Oct. 21.

They started things off with folk standard “Walk Right In” which gathered the crowd to the front , then carried on with  the upbeat and jazz tinged   “You Make My Pants Want To Get Up and Dance,”  which the crowd did with pleasure and son ging along with “I Got Stoned And I Missed It.” .

He played numerous Dr. Hook hits like “Queen of the Silver Dollar,” “When You’re In Love With A Beautiful Woman,” “Freakin’ at the Freaker’s Ball,” and “Sylvia’s Mother,”  and sounded great for a man who is crowding 70.

But even though I thought he and the band sounded great, he wasn’t happy, and got another monitor added to the four already surrounding him and got the sound people  to “fix” the sound, but they only succeeded in destroying it.

Luckily the crowd was either “too stoned” or drunk and didn’t seem to miss it. After the sound got “improved” the bass ended up drowing out the rest of the band including Sawyer especially on the disco flavoured  “Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk.”

He spoke a little to the  crowd about forming the band in 1969 and apologized for the crowd, and before you knew it a good hour had passed before he and the band launched into their signature hit “Cover of the Rolling Stone.”
