Time: 8 p..m

The Slice has their usual weekly open mic on Thursday nights.  So come out and play.

We're doing jam night a little different tonight, it's being hosted by two rock bands from Cuba and Mexico! They're going to start the night off at 8pm with a few sets so come on out!

ADICTOX (Santa Clara, CUBA)

Cuban punk band Adictox is returning to western Canada, this time with their friends from Guadalajara, Mexico CANIBALES. Both Adictox and Canibales will be touring in support of records released in Canada by Edmonton based record label The Grizzlar Records. Although both Cuba and Mexico have just experienced natural disasters, their Canadian tour remains unaffected.

Adictox has been an active band since 2010, formed out of the demise of seminal Cuban band ESKORIA. Adictox toured Canada in 2015, and impressed crowds across the country. Playing punk in Cuba is difficult. There is little official support in the regimented society, and the band runs into many issues relating to maintaining the means to play and tour within Cuba. The country has dealt with an economic embargo since 1960. This economic embargo has also had intense cultural implications, and rock n roll was once outlawed in Cuba as a foreign and corrupting influence. Members of Adictox played in ESKORIA, which was Cuba’s first long running punk band. In 2012, Canadian producer Jesse Gander travelled to Cuba and produced two records, one for Adictox and another for ARRABIO. Both of these records are currently being pressed as collectable picture discs and represent the very first albums recorded in Cuba to be pressed to vinyl.

Playing punk in Cuba is difficult, but leaving Cuba to tour your punk band is even harder. A full year and a half of planning and negotiation was necessary to get Adictox to Canada. Just before the band was due to arrive, Irma was headed towards Cuba. Adictox was able to secure seats on a last minute flight added by Air Canada to evacuate travelers who would be impacted by the storm.
The band arrived safely in Canada and has played several shows in Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa with a re-united Ballast, and is gearing up for the VARNING from Montreal fest. They play at Katacombs on September 21, sharing the stage with . They head to Winnipeg on September 26 to meet with Canibales before heading west.

CANIBALES are a denim jacket rock n roll band from Guadalajara, Mexico. The band has a large following in their home country, well known for their riff laden live show which starts on 11 and goes from there.
No strangers to the highways and side roads in Mexico, they are joining Adictox for a first rip down the Trans-Canada. Although Mexico City recently experienced a devastating earthquake, Guadalajara was not directly affected and the band is scheduled to arrive as expected.
