Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden celebrates 52 years of friendship between Japan & Canada

Another year has gone by, and Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden continues to grow and expand to engage new audiences. This Friday, July 12, Nikka Yuko will be celebrating their 52nd anniversary, marking another year of friendship between Japan and Canada here in Lethbridge.

The garden is pleased to host the Deputy Consul-General of Japan in Calgary, Mr. Yasuhiko Tanaka for their celebrations – making it his first visit to Nikka Yuko. Mayor Chris Spearman, Lethbridge & District Japanese Garden Society President, Brad Hembroff, and MLA-East, Nathan Neudorf, will also bring greetings during Nikka Yuko’s celebration in the garden.

“The garden continues to expand in terms of programming and events that promote Japanese and Canadian culture,” says Michelle Day, Executive Director of Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden. “We’re a Canadian garden done in a Japanese style, so we strive to bring the two cultures together while also recognizing the unique journey of those of Japanese ancestry in southern Alberta through celebrating different customs and traditions.”

Nikka Yuko has seen new fans this year with the introduction of Sumo Sundays, a weekly program dedicated to learning about the world’s oldest sport. This program, organized by one of Nikka Yuko’s board members, Tad Mitsui, has attracted many younger visitors to the garden.

“The garden’s programming has evolved to adapt to our community over the past 52 years,” says Day. “We’re always looking at ways to engage with different demographics and to educate the public on Japanese culture, so it’s encouraging to see a younger crowd in the garden and be able to be that stepping stone to learning more about Japan and about garden designs and purposes.”

The 52nd anniversary celebration will consist of several 10-minute dance performances by Oriental Motion from Calgary, beginning at 1 p.m., followed by greetings from the invited dignitaries at 3:30 p.m., and ending with a cake serving for all guests at Nikka Yuko at 4 p.m.

The Canadian Embassy is also celebrating 90 years of diplomatic relations with Japan this year and Nikka Yuko is pleased to have been invited to be a part of a video series the Embassy has created to feature Canadians with strong ties to Japan. The video, featuring board members David Tanaka and Colin Hirano, will be released later this month.
