Average Joes open for the bands contest is winding down for April, with the last chance to compete for an opportunity to Dalliance Elixer won Average Joes open for the band competition, April 21. Photo by Richard Ameryopen for Nazareth happening this Thursday.
As always there were a lot of familiar faces lining up for the competition, April 21.
I finally got a chance to see local classic rock band Band of Brothers, who will be at the Front Row Pub, April 30.

They began the evening by taking a long time to set up and soundcheck, then played a tight set of covers including John Cougar Mellencamp’s “ Authority Song,”  The Cult’s “Wildflower” and ending their bass heavy set with AC DC’s “TNT.” Their frontman had a lot of charisma as he chatted with the crowd like old friends.

Deadvoice was back and continued to show improvement. They began with an excellent version of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” and a couple of other upbeat modern rockers which I think were originals, though I couldn’t tell as I couldn’t hear much of it  due to overpowering bass.

Deadvoice’s former frontman Dan “Freight Train” Trivates, set up quick and played three catchy, upbeat, riff laden originals on an acoustic guitar which I couldn’t hear very well. I liked what I did hear though. He ended with a  tender, new ballad.

For a complete counterpoint to that,  Sacred Savage played a savage set of modern metal. They were an extremely tight, not to mention loud band as I couldn’t hear much of the vocals. But I was impressed with all the big riffs and balls to the wall intensity.

This week’s winners Jolene Draper and Murray Nelson closed off the night with two of Draper’s brand new, catchy, jazz tinged poppy originals.

One was about turning 30, the other was about sunsets and she ended with Nancy Sinatra’s “Bang, Bang.”  The judges were really impressed by her stage presence and beautifully unique voice. She will be joining the first winner, Gravity Crash and last week’s winner Curt Young, who also played during the competition, in the finals in June to see who opens for Nazareth, July 21.
