There are no dirty connotations associated with the name of  Winnipeg “roots” quintet The F-Holes. A F-hole is actually the sound hole of a semi-hollow-body electric guitar or mandolin.

They are looking forward to bringing their blend of rockabilly/ country/ Dixieland jazz and their quirky sense of humour to Lethbridge for the first time, June 8 when they play the Slice. The F-Holes come to Lethbridge, Wednesday. Photo submitted

“We like playing a lot of different genres. I guess some people call us swing roots,” said Eric Lemoine, the F-Holes’ banjo player, pedal steel guitarist, resonator and electric bassist.

“We play a little bit of everything from a little bit of rockabilly to a little bit of Dixieland, so I guess we’re versatile,” he said. All of the band members play multiple instruments including several different horns.

“We played a lot of blues music. And we’ll switch it up during the show,” he said.

“It’s great. We’ll play the blues but we can cater to the crowd. When we come to Lethbridge, we'll be able to play any style and be able to play something somebody likes. We have a variety of sounds,” he said, noting  a couple of the members studies music at the University of Manitoba.

“We play upbeat stuff with a high level of energy. We want to see people up and dancing. That’s what we like to cater to,” he continued.
They have two solid sets of original material, but will throw in a couple of covers from the likes of Tom Waits for variety.

They have been playing together for 12 years as the F-holes with a variety of different band members. The core of the band, Lemoine plus bassist Patrick Alexandre and drummer Evan Friesen grew up together. The current line up has been together for about three years.

The band has played all over Southern Alberta including the Medicine Hat Jazz Festival, where they will be playing  on June 24, but have never made it to Lethbridge.
“We love it out west. We  play lots of festivals out there,” he said.
