Perpetrators play sizzling blues rock

The biggest and best show of the night, if not the month, was the return of Winnipeg blues rock trio the Perpetrators, who blew away aThe Perpetrators playing a smoking set of blues. Photo by Richard Amery sold out Slice, Sept. 9.

I arrived in the middle of a high octane set of blues rock which ran the gamut from slower blues jams to extended jams on upbeat rockers including something guitarist/ singer Jason Nowicki said was a Chuck Berry song. The band was locked in and played a water tight set of exciting rock and roll.

Everyone knew what was about to come as they gathered in front of the stage at the end of their first set as Nowicki called “Everybody in position?” The band tore into “Six Pack,”  a crowd favourite about being mugged for a six pack of beer, which got everyone dancing.

Their second set included a couple of Hound Dog Taylor nuggets, “You’re Gone,” and “Give Me Back My Wig” on which Nowicki aped a lot of Hound Dog Taylor’s guitar picking style.

Their second set also included several tracks from Jay Nowicki and original Perpetrators’ drummer Ken McMahon’s side project “ K-Mac and Howik’s Punk Blues Fun House.”

You have to appreciate a band hot enough to get an entire room to “shake it” with a song literally about vowels and consonants. After that, the crowd was happy to shake it to new song “Shake It.”

And though Nowicki described the new project as a punk blues duo, the new songs sounded like vintage Perpetrators, especially with bassist Ryan Menard digging in with the groove.
 Fantastic.
