Unknown Culprits worth going out on a Sunday

I am glad I made it out to the Slice,  Oct. 2 for  Toronto based, Kootenays born band The Unknown Culprits. The Unknown Culprits showed their many influences, Oct. 2. Photo by Richard Amery
They have really picked up their game since they were last in Lethbridge in April.

While I missed their first set, which included much of their new CD “Shitcha,” I was there in time for their second set where they really showed their diverse influences.

You have to appreciate and respect a band which can incorporate Willie Nelson’s “On The Road Again,” Motorhead’s  “Ace of Spades,” throw in a couple of their originals as well as “Homer at bat” and “Your Wife Don’t Understand You but I Do” from the Simpsons as well as Monty Python’s “Sit On my Face,”  add some pop punk and grunge a plus play some Hendrix style guitar soloing with their teeth, and make it all work. They sounded like Los Lonely Boys with a weird sense of humour and a love for pop culture.

But they showed their musical chops in spades, supplying a solid groove and some incendiary yet tasteful solos and wrapped it all up in a cornucopia of fun. It’s too bad they only had  about 30 people, half of whom left  while waiting for their second set. But that’s Sunday night gigs for you.
