Scott Nolan spreads his wings on keyboards

I’ve been following Winnipeg musician Scott Nolan’s career for years, so it is always a pleasure to see him perform again.

He returned to the Slice for three sets of fantastic blues, folk and a little bit of rock, July 14 with drummer Joanna Miller and special guest Chris Dunn (from Ridley Bent) playing lead guitar.

Having Dunn on board let Nolan spread his wings on keyboards, which he played for the first half of his first set, while playing some awesome harp solos.

Joanna Miller sang back up melodies while Dunn supplied beautiful, tasteful solos and added some hot chicken picking.

I had never seen Nolan play piano, but as he banged out a little boogie woogie, it soon became apparent he was adept on keyboards as he is on guitar.

Nolan didn’t say much to the 30-40 people in the audience, and just played and smiled as he switched to acoustic guitar for the rest of the set of nimbly fingerpicked songs.

He ended his first set  by saying he was learning a bunch of sings by the Band when Levon Helm died earlier this year, but got distracted by learning a Duran Duran song, which he “played at Folsom Prison for a prisoners who went nuts over it.”

He then blew everyone away by completely reworking “Hungry Like The Wolf.” Everyone got to solo before they took a break.
