Winnipeg roots/folk band the Hollerin’ Pines formed at various “after parties” in and round the vibrant Winnipeg roots and blues scene.

They have never played Lethbridge before, so frontman Scott Malcolmson is pretty excited about playing the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Aug. 17
“I’ve never played Lethbridge in any band before,” said Malcolmson from just outside of Vancouver, where they are about a quarter of the way through their first tour together as a band.

“We’re on the road for four weeks and we’re doing 20 shows, so we’re pretty busy,” he said.

Malcolmson, who spent four years played guitar and sang lead vocals in a reggae/ funk band the Afterparty, soon started writing new songs that didn’t quite fit in with them and started making new friends in the roots scene.

“ We play mostly originals and throw in a couple covers for fun. But we've got songs we like to jam on upright bass, fiddle and we have a Cajón ( a box shaped percussion instrument on which the drummer sits and beats a variety of different drum sounds).  The drummer plays cymbals with his hands,” he described. “And we’ve got three part harmonies. So I’m really looking forward to it,” he continued.

“I just like the change in instrumentation. I love the different sounds. It’s neat to play next to an upright bass. It’s exciting.”

“I’ve always been interested in people like Bob Dylan and Neil Young and folk singers, and started writing more folky/ country music,” he said.

“ I started making new friends and we started playing around campfires and at parties, so that’s how this band was formed,” he said.
They have been together for about a year and a half. They just completed their debut Ep.

 “We were working a lot on it before this tour. We got the copies of it like two days before we were leaving on tour,” he said.
“ When we get home we’ll have a n EP release party in Winnipeg,” he said.

“ We’re really excited to be on the road and we’re excited to keep the momentum going,” he said.
