Band wars and CKXU Fundrive put the fun in this week

The Lethbridge College Students Association is bringing back the fourth edition of Band Wars to the Barn, Oct. 19. The show features 10 local bands competing for an $800 first prize and $200 second place prize. Performing bands include the Void, the Avulsion, Lightworker, Lustre Creame, the Utilities, Sophmore Jakes, rapper H-Bomb, the Outlets and Shocked Standards.


Tickets for the night, which begins at 7 p.m., cost $5 for students in advance and $10 at the door and for non-students. If you want to support the bands themselves, you can get tickets from them as well.


 Also on Oct. 19, the LSCO celebrates Oktoberfest.with a plethora of activities including the ninth annual accordionfest, a Guinness Book of world records attempt, lots of German food and beverages and the music of the Chevelles. Tickets are $15 from the LSCO, Lethbridge Volkswagen and the U of L Student’s Union.

 University of Lethbridge based community radio station kicks off their annual FunDrive as well. A week’s worth of activities include a dance party at Essies, Oct. 19, featuring DJ  Sheset Steez  DJ Reverin, DJ Pez  DJ Streeter.  DJ Plush playing progressive house music. A suggested donation of five dollars will be taken at the door.


CKXU band are also tipping their hats to prairie talent at the Slice, Oct. 20. Lethbridge bands Concrete Towns, Planet Telex, Sugar Mountain, betterthird and Shipbreaker covering a variety of popular songs from bands based out of the Prairies. Admission is $15 at the door.
Also on Oct. 20,  if your tastes are more Scottish, Average Joes brings in the Lethbridge Pipes and Drums and classic rock band DNR for Scotchtoberfest. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door.


 The Geomatic Attic continues a busy month this week. Fred Eaglesmith played two days at the Attic, Monday and Tuesday, while Mike Spencer and friends take a quick breather before doing a collaboration with the Lethbridge Jazz Society. They bring Chicago based singer Petra Van Nuis and Andy Brown to the Attic, Oct. 18. Tickets are $20 for Lethbridge Jazz Society members and $25 for non-members
It is also a great week for blues lovers at the Slice. They bring in Peter Karp and Sue Foley, Oct. 17 to rock the house with their new CD “Beyond the Crossroads.” The next day they host Chicago bluesman Studebaker John, Oct. 18.
They also bring in Vancouver folk/ alternative singer Bocephus King, Oct. 19. Tickets for Bocephus King and Studebaker John are $10 each. The Peter Karp and Sue Foley show costs $25.
 The Owl Acoustic Lounge also has some excellent shows with Windigo and the Utilities playing Oct. 20 and Dr. Zoo playing Oct. 19.
 If you like hip hop, Vancouver’s Rascalz are back to bring their reunion tour to Studio 54, Oct., 19. They will also feature Heatwave, Strong V, Pzuedo and Pyke. Tickets are $20. The show begins at 9 p.m.
There are some excellent early week shows.
 Pop punk fans will want to be at the Moose Hall, Oct. 22 for Greater than Giants, Fire Away, Sophmore Jakes and Lightworker. Admission is $10 for the show which begin at 6:30 p.m.
 
 There are also a couple excellent early week shows next week. Hamilton songwriter Matthew DeZoete plays the Owl Acoustic Lounge, in support of his latest Hamilton area singer-songwriter Matthew De Zoete is excited about his third CD “Colour Film” which was released in the Spring. He released “Bottom of the World” in 2008 and“Across the Sea” in 2006.
 He will be coming to the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Oct. 22 to share the music from it an many others.
 And if you listened to country music in the ’90s, don’t miss the return of Prairie Oyster, who play the Slice, Oct. 23.
Tickets for the show, which begins at 8 p.m., cost $35.
