It is always a pleasure to hear Southern Alberta songwriter Steve Coffey, who’s gravelly, twangy voice recalls Hank Williams or more  recent Rodney Crowell.

 He visited the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Friday, Jan. 25 with Lance Loree. They were beginning a quick commuters tour of southern Alberta ( because they return home to the Nanton and Vulcan area after each show.

They sounded pretty great as a duo, playing original roots and folk music over a chattering crowd.

 Lance Loree cracked few jokes and didn’t make as many funny faces as he usually does, as he was concentrating on complementing Coffey’s voice, guitar and harp by playing dobro and tasteful, twangy guitar solos.
“Born To Die Young” was a highlight as was “Logging Towns,” from Coffey’s latest CD “Bovine World Rail.” His farming songs were a hit with the crowd, who ceased their chattering to cheer.
 While most of his set focused on original material. Coffey and Loree added an unusual, laid back version of Johnny Cash’s hit “Get Rhythm” as well.
