Over at the Slice, Fred Eaglesmith Dan Walsh played a relaxed set of blues and folk music, April 18.
He told tales like his mentor Fred Eaglesmith does, and spent most of the set sitting in front of a massive board filled with guitar effects.
He’d loop rhythm
s with one and solo over it, then would loop both a solo and a rhythm all the while tapping out a beat with his feet.
In the midst of all of this he’d stand up to play a soulful solo, often using slide, an e-bow or both.
Most of the songs I heard came from his exceptional, brand new CD “Outta The Jam.”
The title track, with a subdued slide guitar solo, was outstanding. His song “Beard” was another highlight.
He sounded like a more acoustic, one man version of ZZ Top combined with a touch of Bill Durst, and sported his own massive ZZ Top length beard. He sang with a touch of twang with his massive voice and sang superb melodies.
There were several highlights including “Traveling Light,” and an awesome version of Tom Waits’ “Going Out West,” with which he ended the second of three sets around 12:30 a.m.
