It was girls night at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Aug. 16 with Vancouver Island based musicians Tereza Tomek and Annie Becker plus Faye Blais and her band.

I arrived midway through Tereza Tomek’s set of upbeat folk featuring Annie Becker on background vocals and percussion.

They sang hauntingly beautiful melodies and a pretty, upbeat number “Bad Man.”
Things got a little darker on a song about a friend of an uncle who got drafted to Vietnam, and lost a leg. Tomek took a brief break as Annie Becker sang a few of her own songs which were a little more inspired by jazz and classical music than folk. Becker talked of busking in New York City as she adjusted her foot tambourine which she was using to add extra percussion.

They played mostly original folk inspired rock music while putting their stamp on covers like Stomping Tom Connors’ “The Hockey Song,” which they gave a more modern country twist.

They also had an ’80s and ’90s pop moment on a cover of ’90s pop band Destiny’s Child during which they added the theme from the hit TV show Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
