It is all about the energy for Calgary born, Toronto based rock trio Secret Broadcast, who come to Lethbridge to play the Owl Acoustic Lounge with fellow Calgarians  Go For the Eyes, May 23.
“It’s all about the energy” said frontman/ guitarist Matt Lightstone, who was born in Toronto, then moved to Calgary where he formed the band including drummer Keith Heppler and bassist Curt Harding, then moved back to Toronto a few years ago.Secret Broadcast play Lethbridge with Go For the Eyes this week. “It just made sense for touring to move to Toronto. There are a lot more cities just outside of Toronto,” he observed, promising an energetic set.

“ We’re jumping off the stage and engaging the audience. We‘re all covered in sweat at the end of the show,” he said.

They recorded their latest CD “Filthy Souls” in Seattle with three time Grammy award winning producer  Adam Kaspar, who has worked with the Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Queens of the Stone Age and Soundgarden.

“ He really knows how to dial in sounds and make a rock band sound like it should,” he said.
“ He really helped us achieve the sounds we were looking for,” he continued.
The band practiced a lot before recording the CD in 12 days last October.

“It was a thrill to work with him. It was a great experience,” he said.
“This is the best sounding  project we have ever recorded. It is the truest representation of the band. I wouldn’t change a thing,” he said.

He noted working with Kaspar was a collaborative process.
“ We sent him  17 or 18 demos,” he s continued adding Kaspar made a lot of suggestions about arrangements and  tempos, though he left tempos  pretty much the same.

“ We practiced a lot before we recorded so we were able to  record 13 or 14 songs in very few takes,” he continued adding most of the songs were recorded in three takes.
“And most of them were recorded live off the floor,” he continued.

He said it has been a couple years since the band played Lethbridge.
“ I’ve been there a couple of times for concerts like Neil Young about two years ago,” he said.

He as excited about touring with Go for the Eyes for seven shows.
“They won the same contest we did with X92 a few years ago, so it is very cool way to reunite two Calgary bands,” he continued.
Secret Broadcast hasn’t ever played with them before though.
“ We’ve heard they put  on a good show,” he continued. So it should be a good time,” he continued.
“We’re looking forward to playing with a Calgary band again,” he said.
There is no cover for the show, which will begin at approximately 9 p.m, May 23.
