Kelowna based rock band the Rockies played the best show I ever thought was cancelled, May 24.
While trying to get an interview with them last week, I was told the show had been cancelled but arrived at the Owl Acoustic Lounge anyway to find the show acoustical, but decidedly not cancelled. They they had a good sized crowd rocking along to a fun filled, high spirited set of acoustic roc
k, which was filled with a lot of covers, but also included spirited, stripped down renditions of their catchy originals, many from their most recent CD which explored the themes of love, lust and drinking beer with your family.
They stripped down to bassist/ vocalist Dean Irving, guitarist/vocalist Dan Harding and Rod Anderson sitting on and slapping a box drum. All three of them sang harmonies.
The cornerstone of their set was an impressive medley of at least 20 songs based on Sublime’s 1997 hit “What I Got,” which included lines from every ’90s hit I could remember and I few I hoped I could forget.
They covered everything from hard rock to bubblegum pop from Eminem to Bon Jovi and threw in some Spice Girls, random rap tracks and the theme song from “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” as Harding imitated DJ record scratching by scratching his guitar strings.
Just to show their influences, they threw in a few bars of the Who’s Baba O’Riley. And nobody missed a beat or a note.
