Music for all tastes this week — from Sled Island to classical

While most of the alternative/ garage/ indie rock crowd will be in Calgary this week for Sled Island where local acts Public Animal return to Lethbridge, June 23. Photo by Richard AmeryAdvertisement, the Yeah Dads and Fist City will be performing, this week is all about keyboards and pianos.


 If you want to hear something different— classical music with some traditional folk, jazz and pop thrown in for variety, don’t miss the Centric Music Festival  at CASA, June 20-23.


 There will be several performers including organizer Jesse Plessis, plus several Manitoba musicians and Luis Ramirez coming all the way from Mexico to play some Stravinsky, June 20 with soprano Jaimee Jarvie.  Also on the bill are the Bison Duo ( clarinetist Christopher Byman and pianist Theresa Thordarson) plus  Banff singer Heather Jordan playing June 21. Jaimee Jarvie returns June 22 to play with Schubert scholar Brian Black plus Jesse Plessis and Bente Hansen will be playing the entire Beatles'  Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band  album on dual pianos. Tickets for each concert cost $15 for adults, $10 for students.

 If you aren’t going to Sled Island, you can get a preview of several of the acts performing there right here in Lethbridge.
Electro-pop musician Jay Arner will be playing the Owl Acoustic Lounge, with Pop Crimes and local electro act Open Channels on Wednesday, June 18.


 Both Arner and Pop Crimes will be at Sled Island as well. The same night, Yukon Blonde frontman Jeffrey Innes re-explores his electro pop side with his  band High Ends.

University of Lethbridge based community radio station CKXU gets psyched for Love and Records, Sept 13 with a special concert at the Slice, June 19 featuring Shooting Guns (who are also at Sled Island), Robotoroboros and the Yeah Dads. Admission is $15. The show begins at 9 p.m.


Another band coming to Lethbirdge via Sled Island is Ian Blurton (of C’mon and Blurtonia)’s new high octane, high volume organ powered rock band Public Animal. They played Lethbridge in January for a handful of people but made quite an impression. This time they hit Bo Diddly‘s on June 23 with the Void and Robotoroboros. Tickets cost five dollars at the door. The show is scheduled to start at 9 p.m.

Five Alarm Funk, the highlights of last years CKXU Love and Records, return to Lethbridge, Monday, June 23  for another  hot, sweaty  night of upbeat funk, rock and jazz music with a lot of laughs thrown in as well.
 Tickets for their show at the Slice cost $15.


Lethbridge funk/ alternative rock trio Cosmic Charley officially release their new CD this weekend at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, who celebrate their Owlversary with special guests Pandacorn, June 20. Mitch Belot plays the Owl Acoustic Lounge, June 21.


There is also a big rap and hip hop show at the Army Navy club, June 19 featuring 2011 Juno nominee and ECMA award winner Ghettosocks with Aerosubtle, Transit, Relic, Steezy Ray and Pzeudo. Admission is $10. The show begins at 9 p.m.


It is also a great week for metal music.
 Inferno has a Wednesday night metal night, June 18 featuring a variety of local acts including Eye of Horus, the Avulsion, A Terror to Realize, Tickets to the Car Crash, Doom Princess. The show begins at 9 p.m. Admission is  $10.

And, just announced Inferno celebrates the Solitice Soltics— A Rock and Roll Solar Ceremony with a barbecue and jam session, Saturday, June 21. Several bands will be performing including She Lives, Penitentz, Just Stay Fucking Dead, Wagonburner and Chief Mountain.
 Bo Diddly's also has a metal show this week, June 21 with Acallia, Obsidian Soul and Trancide. There is no cover for the show, which begins at 9 p.m.


 And if you like traditional country music, circle June 22 on your calendar as the Blue Ridge Mountain Society has their monthly jam at the Moose Hall beginning at 1 p.m.. That evening, Scott Woods will be performing a tribute to Don Messer at Southminster United Church at 8 p.m.. Tickets cost $25.


 Inferno has started a comedy open mic on Thursday nights.
 Cameron Bye will be the host of the first one on June 19. There is no cover to attend.
