Last week's downpour took its toll on local concerts this week.

 Library Voices and Yukon Blonde frontman Jeff Innes’ High Ends show at the Slice had to be relocated to a house  due to flooding in the Slice's basement, so I didn’t get to the show.

 The rain also cancelled a big hip hop show with Ghettosocks on Thursday.
 But one show which did go on was a show of contrasts at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Wednesday, June 18.

 I went to the show expecting nothing but keyboards and pop music but it was anything but.
Local  garage rock band Open Channels opened the show.  Usually Jane Edmundson's keyboards are front and centre, but this time were buried behind catchy pop hook filled guitars. I hadn’t seen them for a while so I was glad I caught at least some of their set.
 I only caught a couple of their songs but really enjoyed the last one which had a Lou Reed/ Velvet Underground sound to it.

  Winnipeg's Pop Crimes were an ear blisteringly loud, violent contrast to Open Channels.

 The crashed into an incendiary set of big, Pixiesish guitars for their dark and intense set of post hardcore punk which sounded like a blend of the Slates and the Pixies. There was white noise walls of feedback.

“Radio Eye,” a song their released on their seven inch was a highlight.
 They followed that up with a brand new song they recorded for the first time during a live radio spot at CKXU  earlier in the afternoon.

 Jay Arner was next. This was the keyboard powered  ’80s pop style show of the night, which sounded like a blend of New Order and the Strokes.

 Though Arner played bass for most of the set while singing. He had  a strong New Order style, ’80s new wave sound.
 The band added extra vocal harmonies and banter.

 Their new single TSATS “Throwing Shit At The Sun” was a highlight.
 they ended with another new song which had more of a ’60s pop feel to it as Arner switched to guitar.
