Lots of blues and jazz happening this week

While last week was all about head banging, ear ringing rock and roll, this week is more about jazz blues and folk music and something a little more unusuDan Walsh Returns to Lethbridge, April 13. Photo by Richard Ameryal.

The Slice features a surf night, April 10 with Calgary surf band the 427’s and local surf band the Atomicos. There is no cover for the show, though donations for the bands will be accepted.
The 427’s will be featuring Eve Hell on bass who also plays in another Calgary surf band with one of my favourite Calgary musicians Erin Ross who coincidentally returns to play the Mocha Cabana this weekend, April 10 and 11.

The other unusual show also features a whole lot of soul, April 10 as Todd Lacharite’s  Space Invaders Art Show opens with music from Mwansa Mwansa and guitarist Fei Fei Du. The reception is at 7 p.m. with the music beginning at 9 p.m.

The roots and blues side of the spectrum begins early on April 8 as Canadian singer songwriter Rolla Olak stops by for a show blending gentle picking and bursts of electricity a la Neil Young’s Crazy Horse.
The Owl Acoustic Lounge features energetic blues rock trio Devon Coyote, April 11.

The Slice has a big Monday night show on April 13 featuring big, bearded roots rocker Dan Walsh who is a veteran of Fred Eaglesmith’s band the Flying Squirrels. The talented Ontario based guitarist released his last CD “Outta the Jam” in 2013. The talented musician and storyteller never gets the turnout he deserves, so be sure to check him out.

For more mainstream country, local favourites Tom and Curt play April 10 and 11 at the Front Row Pub. Casino Lethbridge features Calgary country singer Shannon Smith, April 10 and 11 as well.
If you didn’t get enough straight ahead rock last week, the Dudes are just your ticket this week when they play Think Tank Events’ fifth anniversary party , April 12. The show also features local rock trios Cosmic Charley and the SuperVoid. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance. It was to be at the Italian-Canadian Club but has been relocated to  Studio 54.

The Slice features an alternative rock show on Thursday, April 9 featuring Fox Eyes, bass and drums duo betterhalf and Vancouver pop- punk , power pop band Sightlines. There is a seven dollar cover for the show, which begins at 9 p.m..

For something more exotic, the U of L Global Drums ensemble are taking you to all the beaches of the world with their annual spring concerts, April 10 and 11 at the University Theatre.

“The first half of the show will be a gigantic beach party. We’re taking you to beaches all over the world,” enthused director Adam Mason, promising there will be selections from all over the world including Trinidad, Brazil, Rio De Janeiro  and South America. Tickets cost $20 regular, $15 seniors,  and $12 students. The show begins at 8 p.m. each night.

Last , but not least, monthly ukulele jams have returned. The next one is April 12 at CASA from 2-3 p.m. So bring your ukulele and have some fun.
Looking ahead, tickets just went on sale for Shooter Jennings’  Oct. 4 show at Average Joes. He will be playing with his late, great dad Waylon Jennings’ band “ Waymore’s Outlaws.”
Tickets cost $45 in advance, $55 on the day of the show.
