After a busy Lethbridge Jazz Festival week, you can take a bit of a breather, though not for long.
In addition to the Centric Music Festival coming up, June 24-28, this week CKXU and the Electric Eye Music Festival is helping you get psyched for Sled Island in Calgary with a trio of shows featuring Sled Island acts visiting Lethbridge first.
The first show, at the Army Navy Airforce Club,Saturday June 20, features a slew of Montreal alternative rock bands including post rock band Big Brave, experimental rock band Maicamia which features a member of Godspeed You and electronica band Technical Kidman. They will be accompanied by local electronica act An Ant and And Atom.
The second show is a big rock show at the Slice the next day, June 21 featuring Medicine Hat metal trio Terra, Winnipeg punk/ garage rock duo Vampires and local garage rock trio the Ruby Plumes and alternative rock band Internet Love.
The third show is at the Owl Acoustic Lounge June 23 with Danish experimental electronica DJ HVAD plus Vancouver punk / no wave band Softess and Sackville, New Brunswick punks Kappa Chow. Admission to the shows is $10 each or $15 for a wristband including admission to all three.
If you like electro-industrial music, one of the pioneers of the genre returns to the Slice, June 18. En Esch, who has played with KMFDM, Slick Idiot and Pigface comes to Lethbridge in support of his sophomore CD SPÄNK. He will be joined by Buffalo, New York’s Ghostfeeder. Tickets cost $10. The show begins at 9 p.m.
There are also several excellent mid-week events.
Saskatchewan singer songwriter Jeffery Straker returns to Lethbridge for an all ages concert at McKillop United Church, June 18 at 7:30 p.m.
The singer/songwriter/ pianist recorded his 2012 CD “ Vagabond” with Danny Michel. He released his most recent CD North Star Falling in march. He has been compared to the likes of Elton John, Ben Folds, Billy Jpel and Sarah Slean, to name a few.
Tickets are $15. The show begins at 7:30 p.m.
The Infunit Arts Academy will hold their annual concert 2-5 p.m. at the Lethbridge Legion, June 20. They will be raising money for the Lethbridge Family Services and Lethbridge Food Bank by taking a five dollar donation.
Calgary folk punk band the RiverJacks return to Lethbridge, June 19 to play Inferno with the Youngbloods and Lock N’ Load who are playing more often. Admission is $10. Doors open at 8 p.m.
The Slice has a unique week planned as they begin a busy week with Guelph based blues, garage rock band the Galactacats, June 17.
While if you love Ween, several local bands with be taking part in “Painting the Town Brown — A Tribute To Ween,” June 20.
Performers include members of Tod Robinson and the Gleu, Planet Telex, The Ruby Plumes and Lustre Creame. The show begins at 9:30 p.m. There is a $10 cover for the show.
The Slice also features a fundraiser for the third annual Lethbridge Girls Rock camp on June 19. Bands are to be announced. Admission is $10 at the door, $8 in advance from Blueprint. The Lethbridge Girls Rock camp gives campers one week to learn an instrument, form a band, practice a song and play it all in the span of a week.
The Owl Acoustic Lounge has a mostly local line up this week with folk duo Pete Watson and Joel Bryant returning June 19 and local eclectic rock trio Adequate playing June 22.
But they also feature Moose Jaw guitarist Kieffer McLean playing June 22 instead of their usual Monday open mic.
If you want to rock and roll, Soup of Flies are at Casino Lethbridge this weekend.
