Public Animal is on the road in support of a couple new split 12 inch and 7 inch records.
They will be playing with Calgary’s Napalmpom at the Slice, Aug. 23 in support of their new 12 inch with them.
“We started talkin
g about it with them in 2013 or 2014 and really focused on it when were at Sled Island with them last year,” said bassist Eric Larock, from Sudbury en route to the first show of the tour with Napalmpom in Regina.
“ I’m based out of Ottawa and the others (vocalist/ guitarist Ian Blurton from C’Mon and Change of Heart, vocalist/ keyboardist Caitlin Dacey from Bella Clava and drummer Ryan Gassey) are based out of Toronto, so it can be tough to get together. I’ll commute once a month and we’ll organize things,” he said, adding though they have the Split 12 inch out, they are going to focus on music from an upcoming full length CD.
“So this is like three weeks of paid rehearsal time with them,” he said.
“ We have a a yet to recorded album coming out and we have about 17 new songs for it. So we’ll be able to test them out on the road. We’re definitely looking forward to it. We’ll be able to add the final touches to them, he said adding the new CD won’t include any of the songs from the split.
Each band did a cover of one of their favourite unknown Canadian artist, so Public Animal recorded Living Proof’s “Don’t Let Me.”
“ Ian listened to them a lot and never thought their record got the recognition it deserved, ” Larock said.
“ So hopefully we can introduce them to new audiences. They influenced Ian a lot playing around Toronto,” he continued.
While Napalmpom recorded their portion of the split in Calgary, Public Animal recorded their part in Toronto with Larock’s former Tricky Woo bandmate Adrian Popovich mixing it.

They also have a seven inch split with Nanaimo band Moths and Locusts
“ They’re kind of a psych rock instrumental band.
Each band has one song per side but there is a loop that inks both of them. Ian (Blurton, guitarist/ frontman) knows their bass player so it’s a kindred spirits kind of thing,” Larock said.
They also have a show in Victoria on Aug. 18 with Moths and Locusts.
But they are excited to touring with Napalmpom.
“ We’ll have them in tow with us, actually in Lethbridge they’ll be headlining, so they’ll have us in tow and the Supervoid, who played with us the last three times we were there, so it will be good to see them again,” he said.
The show begins at 9 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 23 at the Slice.
