It is always a pleasure to hear Miesha and the Spanks live. They rocked a Wednesday night at Attainable Records, Oct. 22 for a surprisingly strong crowd of approximately 50 as part of their tour in support of their new EP “ Stranger.”
Unfortunately I missed local band Biloxi Parish, who I’m sure turned a few heads and most of Tyson Wiebe and Mickey Hayward’s alternative rock duo Cope’s set, but was just in time for Miesha and the Spanks.
Miesha Louie was engaging behind the microphone and bashing away on her guitar. But drummer Sean Hamilton was a blur and a powerhouse behind the drums giving the Calgary based duo a massive sound.
His rhythm combined punk energy with touch of catchy ’60s style pop. Louie’s vocals reminded me a little of Nathan’s Keri Latimer trying on her rock and roll shoes mixed with a lot of ’90s Riot Grrrl bands like Hole and L7.
They played some new songs including one they hadn’t played for anybody as well as several tracks from Miesha and the Spanks’ 2011 CD “ Girls, Like Wolves.”
They saved the new single “Strangers” for last. It was powered by a ’60s rhythm that reminded me of “That Thing You Do.”
The duo were locked in as expected, matching each other time change to time change and rhythm to rhythm.
They were called back for an encore of “Girls, Like Wolves,” before calling it a night.
