Pop, Hip Hop, indie rock and opera this week

 February opens with an open mic at Club Didi, Feb. 1 beginning at 9:30 p.m. There is a five dollar cover to cover the room rental. On the weekend there are a couple of special events, The University of Lethbridge Opera Workshop bring their annual February collaboration with the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra to Southminster United Church, Feb. 3 and 4. This year, it is all about Gilbert and Sullivan, so  expect to hear scenes from their famous comedic operas  HMS Pinnafore, The Mikado and the Pirates of Penzance to name a few.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range between  $25-$75.


Attainable Records host a diverse night if indie rock on Thursday, Feb. 2 as Saskatoon based post rock band The Basement Paintings, return to Lethbridge with local  shoegaze band With Gorgon Arms, electronica  duo Clockwork Tows and An Ant and an Atom and WINT. The show begins at 8 p.m. There is a $10 cover.


It is a great week for local music as usual. Local funk rock trio Adequate make Coyote Joes a little more funky on Feb. 3 for a free show beginning at 9 p.m.
 Downtown, local folk/ roots musician Karen Romanchuk returns to the Mocha Cabana, Feb. 3 to play some music from 6-9 p.m.


Things get mellow as Regina based ambient indie rock band Bears in Hazenmore return to Lethbridge to play the Slice with Stacy Tinant and Field Holler, Feb. 3.
The Slice also rocks the next night, Feb. 4 with local rock band JJ Thomas and Edmonton’s HungryHollows. There is a $10 cover charge.

Fellow Edmontonian Scott Cook and the Second Chances return to Lethbridge, Feb. 4 in support of their brand new CD “Further Down the Line” to play their unique brand of roots music at the Lethbridge College Cave, Feb. 4. Local country/ roots duo Burning Bridge open the show. Tickets are $25 for members, $30 for non-members including a year’s membership.

 
Also Feb. 4 Jenn and Paul Kype return to Plum to play a little bit of blues and folk music at Plum.
There is also comedy this weekend as Yuk Yuks comedy returns to Average Joes, Feb. 3 featuring Marcus Beaubier and Friends, with Bobby Warrener and Dan Hymus. The laughter begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 on the day of the show.

Winnipeg folk pop duo Roger Roger return to Lethbridge to play the Owl Acoustic lounge, Feb. 4. The owl brings back Richard Inmann with Chris Drew on Feb. 3.

The music doesn’t stop after that.
 A couple big pop and hop shop shows are on the agenda to open the week. USS, who have a huge radio hit “Work Shoes,” return to Lethbridge, Monday, Feb. 6 to play Pulse with St. John’s , Newfoundland born, Toronto based pop band Repartee who have a hit single “Duke.”
Tickets are $20. Doors open at 8 p.m.


 The next night, Tuesday,Feb. 7, Vancouver born, Los Angeles based rapper Sonreal returns to Lethbridge to play Pulse, hot on the heels of his hit single “Can I Get a Witness.”
 Clairmont the Second will be opening the show, which begins at 8 p.m. Tickets for that show are also $20.
And later on Boots and the Hoots will be playing roots music, at the Slice for the Windy City Opry, Wednesday, Feb. 8.
