I’m glad Halifax folk musician Old Man (Chris) Luedecke gave Lethbrdge another chance, because he had a good sized, attentively listening audience for an exceptional show full of stories and song at the Slice, March 8. The last time he played Lethbridge a couple years ago, he had a dismal turnout.

But people were there in force on a chilly Wednesday night this time.

 I caught the end of his early starting show.

Luedecke accompanied by mandolinist Joel Hunt were playing an upbeat set of music from his most recent CD “Domestic Eccentric,” which has done well for him. A sweet song about parenting called “The Early Days” was an early highlight.

 He played a Grammy award winning song and talked about the artist getting banjo whiz Bela Fleck to play on it.

“I wasn’t available. I was busy at home raising kids. He can play it better than me anyway,” he quipped.

 He played some impressive clawhammer banjo on that song before playing a request from the crowd for an older highlight “I Quit My Job.”
He switched from banjo to guitar for a couple of songs including “ Year of the Dragon,” a highlight from his new CD which was a highlight of the set as he wound things down for the appreciative crowd.
 He was called back for an encore.
