Calgary met Lethbridge at the Slice , Saturday, April 1.
While I missed Gabriel Thaine and JJ Thomas’s set, I arrived in the middle of a set from groove laden Calgary band Free the Cynics.
Their tight set had plenty of bass groove , riffs and some sweet solos. Most of their set was ambient indie rock, but still catchy as heck. They played a couple of new songs from a new record due out in July.
They ended their set with a new wave sounding song.
Local rockers the Dirti Speshuls were up next. As usual they played a strong set of ’90s style alternative rock along the lines of Weezer and Treble Charger. They opened with a couple of the best songs from their CD and played some relatively newer songs as well. They had big riffs, big gang vocals and were a lot of fun as usual.
