Vancouver pop-rock band Yukon Blonde always equal a good time when the visit Lethbridge. their fans love them and the feeling is mutual, so their April 6 sold out show at Average Joes was a blast as usual.

 The Belle Game opened the show a half hour late to wait for late coming Yukon Blonde fans. They played a  loud set of droning, similar sounding synth pop, that one could easily chill out and mellow two if you weren’t being deafened by excruciatingly loud synth bass.
 Average Joes was awash with the sounds of synth strings, who almost drowned out lead singer Andrea Lo’s impressive vocal range.

 But the main event was Yukon Blonde, who reciprocated the crowd’s love by trying out several new songs in addition to popular songs like “Como,” and bigger hits like “Saturday Night ” and “I Want To be Your Man,” which they saved for later.
 But first, their merch guy told a long joke before noting there was a donation bucket at the merch table to help guitarist Brandon Scott pay for an expensive ticket for talking on his cellphone while trying to find a venue in Edmonton.

 Yukon Blonde started their set on an upbeat, guitar powered not before sharing more synthesizer based and slower new songs which reminded me of ’80s pop like Honeymoon Suite and Loverboy.

 They had  a lot of positive energy, and catchy guitar and synth hooks throughout. But they really impressed me with gorgeous multi-part vocal harmonies, especially those of keyboardist Rebecca Gray who made an older song “Radio” stand out.

 Several of the set’s highlights came from their 2015 CD “On Blonde,” including “Como” and “You Broke the Law.’”

The band wound up the set with  the up beat new waveish rocker “Favourite People”  featuring a very catchy electric 12 string guitar lick played by Brandon Scott, and were called back for an encore of some older songs.
