Spring really starts to cook this week. There really is something for everyone this week from dance music to blues music to modern country music. And indie rock music.
A busy week begins tonight (April 19) at the Owl Acoustic Lounge with a performance from B.A. Johnston on Tuesday and continues on Thursday, April 20 with a sold out show at the Geomatic Attic featuring Calgary folk/ roots band Reuben and the Dark.
On the other hand, if you want to dance, Vancouver based violinist/ pop musician and former Delhi 2 Dublin violinist Kytami and friends ring in 4/20 at the Moose Hall.
Kytami is on at 11 p.m., but there are plenty of local DJs on the bill beginning at 8 p.m. with DJ Rabbyt, Streeter, Das Booty and after Kytami, DJ Fuze and Koot. b2b Talon will be performing. Tickets are $15.
If you just want to laugh, there’s a comedy roast at Attainable Records beginning at 7:15 p.m. where a dozen comics will be trading comedic barbs. Admission is pay what you can.
There are a cornucopia of different live acts performing throughout the weekend.
Country star Dierks Bentley returns to the Enmax Centre, April 21 with Cole Swindell and Jon Pardi. Bentley has written numerous number one hits including “What Was I Thinking.”
Tickets are $55-$105. the show begins at 7:30 p.m.
Calgary’s indie rock band Locomotive Ghost make a long awaited return to the Owl Acoustic Lounge, April 21 in support of their new CD “Into the Glow.” They are playing with Peach Pyramid and local musician Megan Brown.
Local venue Attainable Records says good bye this week with two shows, April 21 and 22 featuring plenty of great Southern Alberta talent
On April 21, Tyler Vanden Dool opens the evening at 6 p.m. .6:00- Vanden Dool followed by Jane Doe a t 6:30 p.m., Medicine Hat rock band Swim are on at 7 p.m. followed by Calgary ambient indie rock band the Fox Who Slept the Day Away. Local rock band Biloxi Parish play at 9 p.m. followed by Fake James and Lloydminster's Our Neighbour the King at 10:30 p.m.. Calgary's Rake Fight finish the night at 11:30 p.m.
Cosmo Duff open night two, April 22, at 6:30 p.m . Edmonton born/Vancouver based alternative rock band Hot Panda are on at 7 p.m. followed by An Ant and an Atom and local stoner rock group The Rainbow Patrol at 8:30 p.m. Edmonton jangle pop band Brunch Club play at 9:30 followed by local rock band the Bummer Club. Local shoegaze/ hardcore band With Gorgon Arms bring the last show to a close at 11 p.m.
Admission is $10 for each night.
There are a lot of local acts performing this week. Zojo Black bring their own brand of blues rock to Casino Lethbridge on the weekend and play the Slice, April 26.
Celtic rock band the Bashed Tatties are also playing a free show at Coyote Joes, April 21.
Saturday night will be all right too. Local jazz/ folk combo the Junkman’s Quire return to the Slice. They will be joined by Desiray (Jared St James & Ashley Northey) who play a "moody rock and blues on piano and electric/acoustic guitar."
The show begins at 8:30 p.m. There is a $10 cover.
Local noise rock/ alternative rock duo Cope officially release their new EP at the Owl Acoustic lounge with local surf band the Atomicos.
And, just outside of town, KCs Pub in the Coaldale Inn hosts the fourth annual Alzheimer‘s Fundraiser.
Local bluesman Keith Woodrow opens the show at 4 p.m. followed by Whiskey Limousine, formerly JJ Thomas.
The evening begins at 6:45 with Driven, followed By Kelly the Bastard and friends, Calgary blues trio Eric Braun Band, Bryan Horvat and local country band the Mark Hall Band close off the night at 10:30 p.m. There is a $10 cover for the show, which also features a silent auction and all kinds of fun.
The fun doesn’t stop either.
There are some excellent early week shows happening.
Folk punk California based Bryan McPherson plays the Slice on Monday, April 24.
There are a couple of great Tuesday night shows too. Juno award winning bluesman Paul Reddick will be bringing his band including MonkeyJunk’s Steve Marriner to the Geomatic Attic beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are $32.50 for the show.
And the Slice has a great Tuesday show too with Toronto based transplanted Calgarians The Fast Romantics who are touring in support of their long awaited new CD American Love.”
They will be joined by Vancouver indie rock band the Matinee. Admission is $10 at the door.
