Oktoberfest and lots more for Thanksgiving weekend

October blows in with a burst of winter, but also a couple fun events.

 Tonight, Oct. 2,  Lacombe’s Jo Jo O and the Woods plus a few friends from the Isle of Wight are going to play some upbeat, blues tinged rock and roll and folk for you at the Slice. The Silkstones are opening the show at 9 p.m.

Later on, put on your German hat and lederhosen at Exhibition Park, Oct. 5 and 6 for Oktoberfest. As always there will be German food beer and live entertainment. Tickets are $10 in advance and $20 at the gates.
But that’s not all. Oct. 5 is very busy. In addition to Oktoberfest, there are several events happening.


The Slice features indie rock and pop punk plus art, Oct. 5. Calgary based pop and indie rock and pop band Gentlmens club with fellow Calgarians, alternative rock band Lionz and Jon Martin of the New Weather Machine. They will provide the soundtrack for a new art display from Dorian  Mindru.


 Down the street at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Ottawa musician Jon Creeden returns to Alberta to play with  the Calgary contingent of his band the Flying Hellfish, aka a few members of Calgary Celtic punk band the River Jacks, who are also on the bill. Admission is by donation.

 The Owl Acoustic Lounge has a busy Saturday planned with the Metrik Jazztet performing a matinee show beginning at 3 p.m., Oct. 6 and featuring Corduroy Brown and Cody Black in the evening. Admission is by donation.


 Over on the north side, Jon Vornbrock puts on his rap hat at the Polish Association of Lethbridge (745 13th Street N) as he debuts his new rap trio Bomb Hugg who are releasing their new CD. Local pop punk band Sessions are also on the bill. Admission is $10.


 Also on the weekend, local acoustic, ’90s rock trio Uncovered play all of your favourite ’90s moments at Casino Lethbridge, Friday and Saturday.
 On Oct. 6, Australian guitar virtuoso Daniel Champagne stops by the Slice for a concert which is almost sold out. Tickets are $10.
 And pianist Frank “Music Box Dancer” Mills returns to Lethbridge, Oct. 7 He performs at the Southminster United Church at  7 p.m. Tickets are $61.50.
