Lots of roots and blues in Southern Alberta this week

There are all kinds of roots and blues shows happening this week. The Windy City Opry has an awesome line up on Wednesday, Oct. 10. Host Shaela Miller returns from tour and welcome Fosston, Saskatchewan songwriter Belle Plaine to the Slice in support of her brand new CD “Malice, Mercy, Grief and Wrath” which  is officially out Oct. 19.  Yukon blues/ roots musician Gordie Tentrees is also on the bill with the D-Rangers’ Jaxon Haldane. As always, the Opry begins promptly at 8 p.m. Admission is $10.


 That same night, Texas songwriter Sam Baker stops by the Empress Theatre in Fort Macleod. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $28.


 The next night David James‘s Johnny Cash tribute Big River  performs at the Yates Theatre at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 11. Tickets are $48.50.
 Dueling pianos with Cal Toth return to Average Joes on Friday, Oct. 12.

It is only one of many cool local shows happening on Friday. Local funk rock trio Adequate bring the funk and the noise to Casino Lethbridge, Oct. 12 and 13. Max Hopkins opens for Manitoban songwriter Heather Jordan on Friday.


 And The Slice welcomes Edmonton based alternative rock trio Moving Bodies that same night.
Winnipeg blues trio the Perpetrators stop by the Slice on Saturday to knock out some high energy blues rock. The show is scheduled to start at 8:30 and Tickets are $15.
 That is competing with a lot of other shows.

 The Owl Acoustic Lounge brings back Papa King and Darryl Düus the same night. And the Lethbridge Folk Club hosts Calgary bluegrass/ folk band Rotary Park with Bob Blair opening at the Lethbridge College Cave. Tickets are $25 for members, $30 for nonmembers including a membership for the season. The show begins at 8 p.m..
For something completely different, the Smokehouse features local hard rock and metal courtesy of Quick Draw, thrash /groove metal band Drearius and metal band Extrados. The music begins at 9 p.m.  There is  $10 cover.
 but that isn’t all for the weekend.
 The Owl Acoustic Lounge features even more folk for a special Sunday matinee show with the Folk Road show aka Dom Fricot, Benjamin James Caldwell, Olaf Caarls and Pieter Van Vliet. As you’re downtown anyway, stop by Casa for the monthly ukulele jam at 2 p.m., Sunday as well.
 Lately, The Owl is all about afternoon shows as Shaela Miller plays a special after school matinee fundraiser at 6 p.m. on Monday. After that they have their usual Monday night jam.
 The Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra opens their 58th season with Russian Inferno at the Southminster United Church. The Symphony will perform Glinka’s Overture to Russlan and Ludmilla, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto Op.35 and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite (1919)
 The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $25 to $65.
 There are even two shows on Tuesday, Oct. 16. Flipfest presents Guelph, Ontario’s Bird City and Phouka and Ashley Northey play Theoretically Brewing beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is $10.
 Calgary country picker Carter Felker returns to the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Tuesday , Oct. 16 as well.
